Instagram shelves new updates after update backlash

08 Aug 2022

The Kardashians have spoken, and Instagram has listened. The photo and video sharing platform has chosen to hold off on their recent plans to update the app following the recent criticism from celebrity icons Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.

The high-profile American personalities – along with many other creators – have slammed the social media platform for imitating popular rival TikTok. It’s no secret that dimming the appearance of photos and making videos more prominent would have a negative impact on many creators who pursue a career based on imagery content. Updates on the platform have since been reversed, including altering the algorithm so that more recommended videos appear on user’s home screens.

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, took to social media commenting “I’m glad we took a risk — if we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough,” alongside responding to concerns and giving a sneak peek into what the Meta owned company has instore for the future, in order to create a better user experience.

What does this mean for social media marketing agencies? The recent updates may lead marketing agencies to utilise Instagram differently moving forward – with more individual approaches being key. If you are looking to grow your following there may need to be more focus around creating reels, due to the increased chance of them going viral and reaching a new audience. Instagram have now made this easier than ever with their reel templates. On the other hand, if you are looking to grow your engagement, over your follow count, it may be best to focus on static images – helping to reach an audience who already follow and have interest in your content.

At KAT, we are on team Kardashian, agreeing that social media platforms are losing their original sole purpose. Although video content is more dynamic and allows advertisers and creators to deliver more in-depth emotions and stories, Instagram was successful for its practical and easy to create content. As for the algorithm, we all love to reach a new recommended audience, but Instagram needs to ensure that the ‘Follow’ button does not become worthless.
