The downfall of Joe Biden and the importance of perception

05 Aug 2024

Joe Biden’s chance to secure a second term as the US President effectively started to evaporate during his disappointing appearance in the first TV debate with Republican rival Donald Trump. His performance included stuttering and indecision that opened him to criticism which the Trump electoral campaign machine was all too happy to seize upon. By contrast, just days later Trump himself survived an assassination attempt, giving him the chance to portray himself in defiance, raising his fist to the crowd.

Regardless of politics, of integrity, even of truth, the perception created throughout the media coverage and across social media was that Biden was weak and ailing while Trump was a strong and defiant leader. It was only a matter of time before Biden would have to pass on the baton.

The US political drama illustrated clearly the importance of perception. Put simply, how people see you matters… and that is where we come in.
